Important Update: Low-Income Special Enrollment Period (SEP) Ending August 25, 2025
If you qualify for a Low-Income Special Enrollment Period (SEP) on the Health Insurance Marketplace, there’s an important change you need to know about.
What is the Low-Income SEP?
This SEP allowed people with low incomes (at or below 150% of the federal poverty level) to sign up for or change health insurance plans anytime during the year — not just during the Open Enrollment Period.
What’s changing?
Starting August 25, 2025, this special enrollment option will be paused nationwide. This means you will no longer be able to enroll in or change plans mid-year under the Low-Income SEP. If you don’t sign up or change your plan by August 25, you will have to wait until the next Open Enrollment Period to get coverage — unless you have another qualifying life event like getting married or having a baby.
Why is this happening?
The government wants to make sure the enrollment process is fair and prevent misuse of the special enrollment option.
What should you do?
If you’re eligible and need coverage, act before August 25, 2025.
If you miss this deadline, look for other options or wait for the next Open Enrollment Period.
