ACA vs. Short-Term Insurance

ACA vs. Short-Term Insurance — What’s the Difference?

April 21, 20251 min read

Trying to choose between an ACA health plan and short-term insurance?

Here’s the breakdown:

👉 ACA Plans are comprehensive, year-round health insurance options. They cover pre-existing conditions, prescriptions, mental health, and more — and most people qualify for a subsidy to help lower the cost.

👉 Short-Term Plans now have a maximum coverage length of 4 months (starting Sept. 1, 2024). They're cheaper, but offer limited benefits and don’t cover pre-existing conditions.

💡 Best Use: Short-term plans can work if you’re in-between jobs or waiting for other coverage — but they’re not a long-term solution.

Need help figuring out which one is right for you? That’s what I’m here for!

Interest and other guarantees in an annuity are subject to the claims-paying ability and financial strength of the insurance carrier that issues the product. Annuities are long-term vehicles. Many have surrender charges over many years, and withdrawals from an annuity prior to age 59 ½ may be subject to a 10% tax penalty.
